2009 is a very special year – not only does it mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of our greatest thinkers, Charles Darwin, but also the 24th of November of this year is exactly 150 years since the first publication of his ground-breaking masterpiece ‘On the Origin of Species’ – a book which documented his theories on evolution through natural selection. His legacy was to profoundly change humanities view of its own place in natural history and give us all an insight into the processes that formed the magnificence of today’s flora and fauna.
To celebrate this momentous anniversary, Yorkshire ‘astound-o-pop’ trio, BEING 747, release into the wild a couple of tracks from their forthcoming evolutionary opus ‘AMOEBA TO ZEBRA’:
Everybody’s got one.... Blimey! - We’re already on chapter 5 of the journey, but thus far no animal has possessed an internal structure on which to anchor muscles and develop more powerful ways of motion.... until NOW! A bizarre worm-like creature develops a primitive endoskeleton around the very first backbone – from there evolved a myriad of different forms leading to fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and of course mankind. It’s time to shake your backbone.
A major step on from their amphibious ancestors, the reptiles were able to lay claim to being the first truly land-living vertebrates. Their secret lay in a scaly, water-tight skin and a strategy of laying their tough leathery eggs on dry land. For over 250 million years the reptiles dominated the earth, branching out into a myriad of forms including of course, the dynamic Dinosaurs....
