Who are they?
Sarandon are a pop band with a short attention span. They formed in late
2003 between London and Leicester. Crayola had the idea for Sarandon swirling
round in his head for some time and finally got round to asking Joe and
James if they'd help out. Simon joined Sarandon in August 2005, replacing
James on the drums.
The delicious concept of the band was this: 4 x 7-track 7 mini
albums each containing enough short bursts of spazzy pop to keep
the listener fed, but not bloated. Each one to be released by a different
label, then all 4 labels to team up and put out the lot as a large album
at the end. The absolute minimum of mucking about - keep it lean, taut
and thrifty. Over before you know it.
The first of these releases was The Miniest Album (Run Out
/ Banazan). Released in 2004 it quickly gathered some great reviews from
all over the world along with a bunch of radio play and enticed new fans
such as Japans Melt Banana. Not bad for a band that had only rehearsed
twice and played live once before their recording. They followed this
with 'The Big Flame' (Banazan) in the middle of 2005 which saw the
band having rehearsed just once more before going into the studio
laziness or perfection? You decide.
Wrath is proud to be involved with the release of album number
3. It is 'The Feminist Third' and follows EXACTLY the same pop blueprint
as the first two, but this time with the addition of stuttering trumpets
and harder-thumped drums. The future sees Sarandon lined up for a tour
alongside their heroes The Nightingales and the inevitable fourth mini.
Sarandon say:
Why pop? - Because pop is good.
Why short songs? - Because theres no need to make them any longer.
Why that brittle sound? - Because leanness is exciting.
Some other people say:
catchy as the flu, incredibly listenable and very, very short -
the ultimate disposable band The Fly
the most spastic pop I've heard in a while Indiepages
it makes you long for the days when Ron Johnson records released
something as fresh as this every month Rough Trade
Their songs bounce like rubber balls, bringing to memory the dislocated
punk of Yummy Fur, Josef K and -above all- the incomparable Big Flame.
- Go Magazine
This is articulate, quintessentially British pop. Everett
True, Plan B
Sarandon make Arctic Monkeys and Bromheads Jacket and their like
sound positively radio fodder. Artrocker.
